Summary: Lead: In recent years, the competition in China's agricultural screw oil press industry (with screw diameters ≤200mm) has intensified. Some manufacturers, driven by their own interests, have arbitrarily promoted the idea that higher pressing stages always yield better results. As a result, the market now features screw oil presses capable of handling five-, six-, or even seven- and eight-stage pressing processes. But is it truly true that the more stages a screw oil press has, the better its performance?

At the seminar, delegates jointly analyzed the current state of development in the agricultural screw oil press industry, focusing their discussions on the upcoming industry standard for "Agricultural Screw Oil Presses." They explored how to scientifically and规范ly determine the optimal number of pressing stages for these machines. By reviewing the industry’s technological evolution and watching videos shared by end-users, the majority of participants concluded that中小型榨油机 with a screw diameter of 200mm or less should ideally be designed with up to four pressing stages—producing or promoting models with five, six, or even more stages is not recommended. While ensuring product performance, it was emphasized that minimizing the length of the pressing chamber can help reduce manufacturing costs and lower operational expenses for users. However, for大型 screw oil presses with a screw diameter exceeding 200mm, designs with five, six, or even seven or eight pressing stages are feasible and practical, making this an important area for future research. Some experts also noted that companies should not be discouraged from developing and producing中小型榨油机 with five or six stages—encouraging innovation while leaving the ultimate judgment on practicality to the market. Nevertheless, all attendees—including experts, academics, and industry representatives—strongly opposed the practice of using the number of pressing stages as a means to falsely or exaggeratedly promote product features.

On March 18, 2015, the "2015 Spiral Oil Press Industry Expert Workshop," hosted by the China Agricultural Machinery Industry Association and jointly organized by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Mechanization Sciences, the National Technical Committee for Agricultural Machinery Standardization, the General Station for Agricultural Machinery Testing and Certification under the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Quality Supervision and Inspection Center for Grain and Oil Processing Machinery, along with contributors to the "Industry Standard for Agricultural Spiral Oil Presses," representatives from Sichuan Qingjiang Machinery Co., Ltd., Beijing YijiaYi Mechanical Technology Research Institute, Hubei Gong'an County Gule Grain & Oil Machinery Co., Ltd., Guanghan Shuhan Grain & Oil Machinery Co., Ltd., and Henan Xinxiang Machinery Co., Ltd., was held at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Mechanization Sciences in Beijing. Participants gathered to discuss key issues related to the number of pressing stages in agricultural oil presses.

This meeting played a critical role in guiding the oil press industry toward a healthy market order, delivering authoritative product information, and encouraging businesses to engage in orderly competition. Participating oil press manufacturers pledged to fully implement the "Industry Standard for Agricultural Screw Oil Presses," thereby standardizing competitive practices within the sector. They committed to focusing on practical approaches when promoting their products, helping users make informed decisions by selecting screw oil presses with the appropriate pressing level. This initiative aims to foster the sustainable development of the industry, promote scientifically sound and standardized pressing levels for agricultural screw oil presses, and firmly combat misleading advertising—ultimately paving the way for a renewed, positive image of screw oil presses in the market.

For companies engaging in false advertising by exaggerating the number of pressing stages in their oil presses, this practice creates significant confusion for consumers and results in considerable financial losses. Such irresponsible marketing tactics will inevitably lead to further harm for users and, at a certain point, could even trigger a crisis of trust across the entire oil press industry. This meeting serves as a stark warning about this phenomenon, urging everyone to work together in safeguarding the industry's reputation.

This conference has established a vital communication bridge between industry regulators and businesses, serving as a key platform for exchange and collaboration not only within China’s small-scale screw oil press sector (with screw diameters ≤200mm), but also across the broader screw oil-press industry. The seminar will introduce fresh ideas to drive the development of the oil-press industry, encouraging more companies to deliver even more refined and innovative screw oil-press products to consumers—ultimately contributing significantly to the long-term growth and advancement of the entire sector.

CCTV7, the China Agricultural Mechanization Information Network, the China Agricultural Machinery Herald, *Grain & Oil Processing* Magazine, and several other relevant media outlets provided comprehensive coverage of the conference. Additional details about the event will be available in follow-up reports.

Respect science, enforce rigorous oversight, rely on technology, and pursue healthy development.

Party Dongmin, Deputy Director of the Industry Affairs Department at the China Agricultural Machinery Industry Association and organizer of this conference, delivered a welcoming speech at the start of the seminar, inviting everyone to discuss relevant issues and jointly promote the healthy and sustainable development of the industry.

Following this, the attending experts, scholars, and business representatives jointly discussed the current state of development in the agricultural screw oil press industry.

Then, Researcher Li Zhiqing from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Machinery, who was the drafter of the "Industry Standard for Agricultural Screw Oil Presses," along with Du Jiankang, Chairman of Sichuan Qingjiang Machinery Co., Ltd. and also a drafter of the same standard, and Researcher Lü Longqi from the Yantai Institute of Agricultural Machinery—renowned veteran expert in the agricultural screw oil press industry (who receives a national allowance)—as well as Huang Yunlian, General Manager of Beijing Yijayi Mechanical Technology Research Institute, each delivered keynote speeches at the seminar.

Researcher Li Zhiqing from the China Academy of Agricultural Machinery stated in his speech: "Recently, we’ve observed that on China’s market for screw oil presses, alongside the traditional secondary, tertiary, and quaternary pressing systems, there now appear models offering quintuple, sextuple, and even septuple pressing stages. This has significantly increased the complexity for users when choosing an oil press, leaving them feeling uncertain and overwhelmed. The root cause lies in the fact that a few companies have rushed to introduce these higher-level pressing systems without conducting rigorous scientific testing or thoroughly validating their claims through extensive market research. They’ve failed to comprehensively analyze how the number of pressing stages directly impacts oil quality, residual oil content in the dried cake, extraction efficiency, and energy consumption per ton of raw material—factors that are critically linked to both product performance and customer satisfaction. Instead, they’ve carelessly exaggerated the benefits of higher-pressure stages, blindly promoting the idea that screw oil presses with just two, three, or four pressing levels are obsolete. Such practices not only disregard scientific principles but also blatantly disregard the interests of our customers, drawing serious attention from industry stakeholders and relevant regulatory bodies. To safeguard the genuine interests of our valued users, it is our duty—and responsibility—to approach this issue with a scientifically grounded and accountable mindset. Only by providing well-researched, advanced, and economically viable screw oil press solutions can we truly serve the needs of China’s agricultural community."

Researcher Lü Longqi from the Yantai Agricultural Machinery Research Institute reviewed the development history of screw oil presses—from the introduction of screw oil presses in the 1960s to the standardization and first establishment of industry benchmarks for screw oil press technology in the 1980s. Through extensive experimentation, he demonstrated that two- and three-stage screw oil presses can effectively meet the pressing requirements of various oilseeds. Meanwhile, a four-stage press is poised to become the highest stage achievable in agricultural screw oil presses. Moreover, the operational performance of both three- and four-stage models has fully met industry standards. With optimized processing techniques, these machines not only ensure efficient oil extraction but also reduce the residual oil content in the dried cake to as low as 5%. Looking ahead, the emergence of five-, six-, or even seven- and eight-stage agricultural screw oil presses has left him puzzled. He finds it particularly baffling when certain product promotions dismiss the value of two-, three-, and four-stage screw oil presses altogether, calling such claims not only impractical but downright absurd.

Du Jiankang, Chairman of Sichuan Qingjiang Machinery Co., Ltd. and the drafter of the "Industry Standard for Agricultural Screw Oil Presses," remarked at the meeting that the emergence of agricultural screw oil presses capable of achieving fifth-, sixth-, or even seventh- and eighth-level pressing was nothing short of a fantasy—simply unbelievable.

Huang Yunlian, General Manager of the Beijing YijiaYi Mechanical Technology Research Institute, urges all oil-extraction equipment sales companies to base their marketing efforts on reality, promoting both their businesses and products truthfully. He opposes using the number of pressing stages in an oil press to either exaggerate or downplay the actual performance of the products, emphasizing instead that reasonable customer demands should be given due attention. Additionally, he recommends that oil-press manufacturers invest more in developing and producing highly automated, user-friendly crude-oil processing equipment, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of small- and medium-sized oil mills.

Self-reflection and self-discipline, refining standards, enhancing science communication, and driving industry evolution.

While watching the relevant video, viewers noticed that customers who purchased Level 5 and Level 6 oil presses from a certain company found they couldn’t function properly. Yet, when faced with legitimate customer complaints, the selling company flatly refused responsibility, citing the unfair terms included in the purchase agreement—leaving customers with no avenue for redress and feeling utterly helpless and frustrated.

At the seminar addressing this phenomenon, expert representatives unanimously agreed that oil press manufacturers should jointly reject these unethical practices—such as maliciously hyping up the number of pressing stages to mislead consumers, making false claims about product performance, and ultimately harming users' direct interests. Typically, spiral oil press users are farmers who often have an immature consumption mindset and lack awareness of self-protection. They are largely unfamiliar with national laws and regulations related to quality, such as the *Consumer Rights Protection Law* and the *Product Quality Law*, and have limited knowledge about the institutions responsible for handling complaints. As a result, they tend to easily fall for sales companies' exaggerated promises and the pseudo-scientific belief that the higher the number of pressing stages, the better the oil press performs. Unfortunately, these users fail to grasp the critical interplay among the three key factors of an oil press: oil extraction efficiency, energy consumption per ton of material processed, and residual oil content in the dried cake. Moreover, due to their weak awareness of consumer rights and the high costs associated with pursuing legal remedies, many users simply accept their losses when product quality issues arise—either unaware of, or unwilling to, seek help from consumer protection organizations to safeguard their legitimate rights and interests.

Everyone is urging spiral oil press manufacturers to not only adhere strictly to industry standards during production but also to fully comply with all regulations set forth by the Ministry of Agriculture regarding the promotion and certification of agricultural machinery. This includes strengthening quality management systems, enhancing inspection capabilities, upgrading technical expertise, fostering a sound business philosophy, and continuously improving product quality. Additionally, all manufacturing, assembly, and sales companies are required to clearly display the names of both the manufacturer and the seller in a prominent location on the oil press, ensuring customers have greater transparency and informed decision-making power.

Finally, Researcher Li Zhiqing from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Mechanization, Chairman Du Jiankang of Sichuan Qingjiang Machinery Co., Ltd., and General Manager Huang Yunlian of Beijing Yijayi Mechanical Technology Research Institute, among others, urged at the seminar that oil press manufacturers should actively respond to the association’s requirements, earnestly fulfill their social responsibilities, and strictly adhere to industry standards—striving to become role models in the sector. They also called on the Oil Press Association to fully leverage its organizational, coordinating, service, and regulatory functions, safeguarding the shared economic interests of member companies, providing timely market insights, promoting orderly market practices, and jointly combating unfair competition both within and outside the industry.
